250 Residents Benefit as Rotary Club of Akure City Partners Lions Club District 404- A4 on Eye Screening

No fewer than 250 elderly people on Friday 15th September, 2023 benefited from free eye screening as well as distribution of eye glasses put together by Lions Club District 404-A4 in partnership with Rotary Club of Akure City.

At the event held at NEPA Neighbourhood Market Car Park, the President, Rotary Club of Akure City, Rotn. Surv. Semiyu Adigun said he was very happy at the collaboration which will in turn impact on lives of many individuals most especially the less privilege who cannot afford the cost of eye tests and eye glasses.

Rotn. Surv. Adigun who particularly appreciated Lions Club as a sister organization committed to giving help to the less privilege said the collaborative venture will continue as the goal is to continue to empower the people in key mandate areas of interest to Rotary International Club.

While also thanking members for their support towards making the initiative a reality, Rotn. Surv. Adigun enjoined beneficiaries to make the most use of the gesture and never take it for granted.

Giving her address, the District Governor of Lions Club, Lion Dr. Koworola Jegede said the partnership between Lions Club and Rotary International Club is the first of its kind and the begining of a new start for the two service organizations.

Lion Dr. Jegede while also commending Rotary Club of Akure City for being proactive in making the dream a reality within a short time, expressed high hope that the gesture will go a long way in extending service to a large portion of members of the society who cannot afford the cost.

On behalf of Rotary International Club, Rotn. Batife, the District Governor Nominee expressed readiness to host joint fellowship among members of Lions Club and Rotary Club International just as he used the occasion to restate the importance of service to humanity, saying the ultimate goal is for the service organizations to cover more grounds.

In his charge to beneficiaries, Rotn. Batife urged them to make the most use of the opportunity they have been given.

In a separate remark, the Past Council Chairperson of Multiple District, Lion Tokunbo Jegede also expressed high hopes that the partnership between the two Clubs will birth greater yield.

“It is a dream I have envisioned 10 years ago and I am happy that it has finally become a reality”, he added.

He also charged beneficiaries to go through the eye screening exercise and that cases that cannot be handled will be duly refered to the Millennium Eye Centre.

Other major highlight of the event include the official flag off ceremony for the free eye screening and distribution of eye glasses.

The event also featured a short lecture by an Eye Specialist on how to care for the eyes.

In attendance include past and present presidents of Rotary Clubs as well as other members of the Lions Club.

In a chat with newsmen, the immediate past Lieutenant Governor and the Project Chair for the event, Rotn. C. N Nnaemeka said the target of the programme is to reach out to those who have eye problem and cannot afford the cost of the care.

Among cases handled include those with short sightedness and glaucoma.
