The need for the government to fix investment climate and policies to protect local industries and provide electricity which is the backbone of industrial production has been brought to the fore by a Professor of Ceramics, Prof. Tolulope Akinbogun at the 122nd Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, FUTA, held at its main auditorium.

In the lecture titled: “Abundant Resources, Waning Growth: The Paradox of Ceramic Industry in Nigeria”,
Prof. Akinbogun, traced the history of the Ceramic industry in Nigeria through the precolonial, colonial and post colonial era saying Nigeria as a geographical entity has a good pedigree in the production of ceramic rudiments right from prehistoric time.

Prof. Akinbogun who said the story of ceramic industry in Nigeria today is a metaphor of the story of ceramic industry in Britain which colonized Nigeria, affirmed that Nigeria has continued to witness a decline in production and closure of many ceramic industries.

While making case that government should encourage ceramic manufacturing, discourage investment endeavour in rent seeking opportunities, adopt favourable policies and partner private organizations in building ceramic industries in the country, Prof. Akinbogun also restated the need to provide enabling environment for local ceramic industries, as well as build pottery centres and craft galleries for sale of popular pottery works saying government needs to put in more efforts into building its tourism markets as Nigeria is presently not a first-class tourist destination.

As part of his recommendation, Prof. Akinbogun charged all stakeholders to be deliberate in their effort to ensure that the nation’s abundant raw materials do not lie fallow but be put into effective use.

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Fuwape congratulated Prof. Akinbogun for delivering the lecture which is the second from the Department of Industrial Design and also for adding value to the body of knowledge in his field of play.
